It’s a magical time of year in Mendocino County. Seasons are often marked by falling leaves or snowy mountain tops, tulip blossoms or longer days. In Mendocino, there is one season we look forward to more than any other. It happens in late October after the first rainfall and is marked by something unique to the area. With these impending drops of rain come the budding of the much-anticipated and famous Mendocino mushrooms, and the Mushroom, Wine & Beer Festival.
For those of you unfamiliar, our county is the natural home to over 3,000 types of mushrooms! Therefore, we celebrate our favorite fungi every year with a Mendocino mushroom festival. You heard right; ten days of tasty toadstools. You’re invited to forage and pick your own sample of the 500 edible varieties. From the classics like chantrelles and shitakes to the extremely rare and mystically sweet “candy cap” mushroom (found only along California’s northern coastline), there is no shortage of funky fungi flavors.
Of course it wouldn’t be a proper Mendocino celebration without the equally abundant and flavorful beer and wine samples to wash down those morels. Throughout the festival, running November 4th thru 13th, partake in various events like winemaker and brewmaster dinners or pairing workshops. Learn everything there is to know about the mushroom by visiting the many exhibits or attending a guided mushroom foray.
